Eden Project waste management

At Eden Project, sustainability is the foundation of all endeavours. They believe sustainability means ‘the ability to carry on’. To achieve this, individuals must align their lifestyles with the rhythms of nature, adhering to its natural cycles and respecting its limits.

Visitors to Eden have the opportunity to delve into the ways in which the natural world sustains humanity and the interconnectedness of all life within a vast web.

Furthermore, they can witness first-hand how Eden collaborates with nature through various initiatives, such as reducing energy consumption, utilising recycled waste to create soil, prioritising local procurement and transitioning to electric vehicles.

Following the challenges encountered in operational and hygiene management within the hospitality sector during the pandemic, there has been a notable improvement in the Eden Project’s recycling performance, as reported in their 2021/22 annual report.

Enhanced signage and interpretation in visitor-facing areas have contributed to better recycling practices, particularly in the segregation of waste streams for food and beverages. This improvement is expected to continue towards the target of achieving a 72% recycling rate for total waste.

In early 2022, a successful trial was conducted with the Green Waste Company to convert road sweeper waste into organic compost.

A proportion of this compost is then utilised by the horticulture team, effectively closing the loop on this waste stream. If proven successful, this approach will eliminate all remaining waste destined for landfills and prevent the emission of up to 15 tCO2e in the process.

Their current waste statistics are:

  • 54% is sent for recycling.
  • 19% is composted.
  • 23% creates energy from waste.
  • 4% is sent to landfill.
