Chesterfield Borough Council offers businesses in the area a regular commercial waste collection service, limited to waste only.

They collect many types of general business waste and use Standard Industry Classification (SIC) codes to help decide which recycling services your company requires.

When you contact Chesterfield Borough Council to arrange a collection, you must provide them with your SIC code. You can find your business’s SIC code online on the Gov.uk website.

Chesterfield Canal – Waste Management

The Chesterfield Canal stretches 46 miles through Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and South Yorkshire; this historic waterway boasts a rich tapestry of natural beauty and industrial heritage.

Built in the late 18th century to transport coal and limestone, the Chesterfield Canal now serves as a haven for wildlife and leisure enthusiasts. With its meandering pathways, quaint locks, and scenic towpaths, the Canal invites travellers to unwind and explore its timeless allure.

The Chanel and River Trust manage and look after the Chesterfield Canal. As stewards of our canal and river environments, they show how strong waste management can contribute to a greener environment and improved recycling rates.

Each year, the Trust’s commercial waste provider emptied an impressive 67,000 wheelie bins from customer sites, such as boat yards, shops, and commercial activity along the waterways, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining cleanliness along our waterways.

This substantial endeavour required an investment of approximately £750,000. Additionally, they provided over 1,500 skips for various projects, with expenditures totalling over £446,000, ensuring efficient waste collection and disposal.

To meet challenges like fly-tipping and [hazardous waste] deposition, the Trust allocated significant resources to address these issues. Over £117,000 was dedicated to clearing away fly-tipped waste from canal towpaths and other properties, while an additional £112,000 was spent on removing hazardous waste items.

The trust has made remarkable progress in waste recycling. In 2021/22, 93% of waste from customer sites, offices, and worksites was diverted from landfills. This significant achievement is attributable to their robust recycling initiatives, with 88% of waste being recycled and 5% utilised for energy generation.
